Yumiko Kanki, Naota Ishida, and Yukio Kaneoka - F-Zero

7.5 - Japan - 1992

Soundtrack to the excellent, Mode 7 futuristic racing game for Super Nintendo, this may be the best non-Mega Man video game soundtrack of all time.  Despite it being one of the first Super Nintendo games, F-Zero seems to avoid the canned tinnyness of its colleagues (best example: the awful “distorted guitar” sound so prominently featured in NHL Stanley Cup hockey – another Mode 7 game).  The music itself sounds like something Steely Dan would have come up for an alien, and no doubt sexy, robot band in one those futuristic anime movies. “Silence”, in particular, could be an outtake from The Royal Scam.
